There's a reason that they call him "The Solution". Ezequiel Duran is the right answer to whatever lineup problem Skip Schumaker has from night to night. The Texas Rangers' Swiss Army knife is having a career year, and it could pay off with a historical postseason hardware haul.

There is a very real chance that Duran could accomplish something that has never been done before. He has the opportunity to win both a Gold Glove for his defensive versatility and prowess and a Silver Slugger award for his strong season at the plate. The fact that MLB didn't start giving out utility awards until 20222 shouldn't diminish its uniqueness. His individual performance is a big part of why the Rangers are still in the hunt for a playoff berth.

Ezequiel Duran's Rangers breakout in 2026 and will garner attention for both a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger award

There are only a handful of major leaguers who can boast the kind of versatility Duran has defensively. He can play all seven infield and outfield positions with aplomb. Wherever you want to put him, he brings well-above -average defensive metrics and looks like he belongs. To date, he's logged 48 games at shortstop, 36 at third base, 23 at second, 19 in left field, 12 in right, 1 in center, and 1 at first.

Last week, Schumaker needed Duran to play left field in a pinch, and he made a momentum-shifting diving catch. His acumen on the infield all around the diamond speaks for itself, and he has gunned down several runners at home with pinpoint laser throws on relays. It is safe to say that there is no other player in the American League who can do what Zeke does at such a high level.

According to Baseball Savant, Duran is in the 98th percentile in range (OOA) and in the 96th percentile in arm strength. His overall Fielding Run Value is in the 94th percentile. The numbers speak for themselves, and so does the eye test. He currently leads the team in fWAR at 3.4.

At the plate, he is having his best season as a pro. He is slashing .263/.317/.432 with an OPS+ of 115. Among his 106 hits, several have been of the game-changing variety that swung the momentum in the Rangers' favor or put the Rangers ahead for good. The only thing we would change about Duran's approach at the plate is getting him to lay off the curveballs down and away. His chase percentage is in the 17th percentile, and his whiff rate is a 35th percentile mark.

Nonetheless, you would be hard -pressed to name anyone right now who is more deserving of the utility Gold Glove. In a season when the Rangers really needed someone to step into a role the now-departed Josh Smith vacated, he has done it. If Zeke can continue to put together quality at-bats, he will also be on the short list for the utility Silver Slugger.

If he were to win both, it would be historic. Though the utility versions of these awards have only been around since 2022, "The Solution" deserves all the recognition coming his way for being the ultimate team player during a season where everyone around him has been hit with injuries.
