Major League Baseball is a business and the players know they can be moved around like commodities. However, the Rangers surely could've used the 2023 version of their former first baseman, Nathaniel Lowe this year.
Instead, Lowe is headed to the Boston Red Sox and will likely have another shot at a deep postseason run.
Report: Red Sox are close to a deal with Nathaniel Lowe
Lowe, 30, was DFA'd by the Washington Nationals and unclaimed on waivers over the weekend. He has been approached by the Red Sox to shore up their first base situation and is reportedly close to a deal.
With the devastating knee injury to Triston Casas and the uncertainty surrounding his availability moving forward, the team felt they needed to make the move for a left-handed bat with a solid postseason resume.
Boston is currently jockeying for a wild-card spot with the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, but are comfortably ahead of the Cleveland Guardians inside the playoff picture.
Lowe has had a tough year, but he has new life in Boston
In 2023, Lowe earned a Gold Glove at first base for the Rangers and was a staple on the World Series championship team. Since then, Lowe, like many current Rangers, has seen his game fall off significantly.
In 440 at-bats for the Nationals this year, Lowe's average had dipped all the way down to .216 with and .665 OPS and a -0.4 WAR.
Now the former Silver Slugger will look to turn his season around and help the Beantowners navigate the final month-and-a-half of the regular season in the difficult and competitive AL East.
The Red Sox are still weeks away from clinching a playoff berth, but are currently in a comfortable spot that the Rangers would love to be in.
Lowe was a soldier for the Rangers who was also loved by his teammates, so it's encouraging to see him get a chance to salvage what appeared to be a lost season.
