Revisiting ugly Rangers' merchandise after latest failed cap design by New Era

We've all seen a shirt, hat or other piece of apparel that had you wondering, why they made it in the first place. Here is my list.

By now I assume we are all caught up on the latest mishap regarding Texas Rangers merchandise that hit the market to the general public.

If it has somehow managed to get by you then I will summarize it quickly as the story is just mere inspiration for this article. Earlier this week, New Era released their Overlap collection, a series of hats from all 30 Major league Baseball teams featuring an mix of each team's two main logos. The most unfortunate of those designs was the Rangers combination of "T" and "Texas" revealing a Spanish vulgarity. New Era responded quickly after the photo went viral via social media by pulling the product off the shelves only hours after their initial release.

Despite being pulled off the shelves that has not stopped fans from attempting to profit, buying the hat before it was removed and selling it on eBay for upwards of $1,000.

That got me thinking about other merchandise have the Rangers, MLB or other licensing partners have designed over the years that had people shaken their heads in disgust, confusion or even offense.

I'd wear but they missed the mark: Texas Rangers "TX" Alt Red Cap

As part of the opening of Globe Life Field the Rangers went through a redesign of their uniforms. Most of which are the classic looks you see today, including the classic white with "Rangers" script and the tried and true blue and gray jerseys. The hat in question right now was part of that collection, introduced in duo with the team's red jerseys.

The two-toned hat featured a red body with a Texas state outline and the abbreviation "TX" in the middle with the bill being the team's royal blue variation. Sounds pretty neat, doesn't it? Maybe, but the execution itself was done poorly with a lot of fans saying it resembled a gas station truck stop hat.

The design was quickly done away with after the 2020 season in favor the traditional red "T" hat which had a lot of fans wondering why that move was even made in the first place.

I'd wear as a joke: Texas Rangers New Era Jagged 9Fifty Hat

Yes, I have beef with poorly designed hats because it's the clothing item I wear a lot and tend to be very critical and specific about them. Exactly why I have chosen this zebra, wild things-esque hat.

As I mentioned Wild Things, I am still convinced not even Ricky Vaughn would wear this monstrosity. But who knows, I may not have as sophisticated tastes and people reading this will laugh at my terrible takes. Oh well, I am totally fine with being wrong about this one, even though I'm not.

Never in my life: Texas Rangers Pro Standard Fast Lane Full Zip Jacket

I am genuinely confused why anyone would ever wear something like this. It looks like you are a NASCAR driver that was shunned from the sport years ago and you have failed to move on from the heartbreak.

Boasting four different Rangers logos, the year "1972" and a weird version of the American League logo. To top it off I have zero clue what the zippers (?) are supposed to be near the wrist and to make matters worst why do the red and white stripes stop mid-way up the arms?

It's been a trend over the years from brands such as New Era, Nike, even MLB branded items to include any and every team logo on one piece of merch. I have never seen the appeal but maybe that is because I am a minimalist. If anyone has ever bought and consistently wears this jacket please reach out and tell me why your fashion sense is bad.

Honorable Mention: Any Texas Rangers Hawaiian shirt

Why is it popular to make any brand, team, design, etc. into a Hawaiian shirt? Is it really a much-needed item for people that companies feel the need to continually make these. It's fine to make one or two variants and sell those but we see new ones every year and it's tiresome.

Full admission I bought a Hawaiian shirt last week thinking it would be cool to wear and it got donated only a few months later because I never wore it. I decided to make this an honorable mention however because no matter where I go in a baseball setting there's always one person wearing one.
