Apparently the Bay Area is the go-to destination if you are a former manager of the Texas Rangers.
Following the San Francisco Giants earlier offseason hiring on Bruce Bochy, the Giants have now reportedly added baseball legend Ron Washington as the 73-year-old joins the staff as an infield coach.
Washington, the Rangers manager from 2007-2014, was recently the manager of the Los Angeles Angels but due to health complications had to step away from the team in June. At the end of the regular season, Washington and the Angels decided to part ways.
Former Rangers managers teaming up in San Francisco
While it won't be an on-field collaboration since Bochy was hired as a senior advisor to President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey, it does mark the first time these two will be part of an organization at the same time.
Both hold high esteem within the Rangers organization as two of the most respected managers in franchise history. Washington led Texas to back-to-back American League Pennants in 2010 and 2011, which marked the team's first trips to the World Series. Then most recently, Bochy led the 2023 Rangers to their first World Series championship in his first season.
Washington tops list of managers in Rangers' history with 664 wins spread out through eight years as skipper. His .521 winning percentage is fifth-best while Bruce Bochy's .512 percentage is seventh-best in the organization.
Giants get plethora of experience and respect in Bochy and Washington
The future Hall of Famers bring together more than just at one moment in time sharing a similar job title, they bring a combined 100 years of baseball experience. Coming up as big leaguers in the 1970s and later transitioning to coaching.
Bochy is currently the sixth-most winningest manager in MLB history with 2,252, which is over 1,000 less than all-time leader Connie Mack's 3,731 wins. The 70-year-old is also one of only six managers in the history of the game to win at least four World Series.
As for Washington, he's one of the most well-respected baseball minds in the game. Washington got his first big league coaching gig in 1996 with the A's. Among some of the most impacted big leaguers he's helped improve their fielding are Gold Glovers Endy Chavez, Miguel Tejada, Ozzie Albies and former Ranger Marcus Semien.
Entering a new era of Giants baseball with former University of Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello at the helm, the organization is attempting to eliminate four straight seasons of .500 or below baseball. In 2025, they shared a similar fate as the Rangers, ending the year 81-81 and were 12 games back of third place in the NL West.
