The Rangers have a no-brainer World Series hero rotation fix staring them in the face

With Nathan Eovaldi missing at least the rest of the regular season and the Texas Rangers still trying to make a postseason spot, the club could look outside the organization to bolster the rotation. As it happens, Andrew Heaney might have just fallen into Chris Young's lap.

Heaney has spent most of the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, it appears the team didn't want him to make it to 130 innings pitched for them. Had he done so, he would have earned an additional $100,000. So instead, one of the worst run, cheapest teams in baseball, but him loose and designated him for assignment.

Should the Texas Rangers claim Andrew Heaney after the Pirates’ DFA?

Now, Heaney is available to be claimed. Because his price tag at this point in the season is relatively minuscule, he has to be considered a possibility for the Texas Rangers.

Because it appears that the Pirates can't help but look awful, they first moved Heaney to the bullpen after he spent most of the season in the rotation. This move was clearly a way to further try to limit his innings and keep him away from making his bonuses. The move was absolutely not some last-ditch effort to win more games. There's no point to that as they're all but eliminated from the playoffs already. Pittsburgh is 25 games out of first in the NL Central and 13.5 out of a Wild Card spot.

It's not as though Heaney had a great season, and that would be the biggest reason for the Rangers to stay away. In 26 appearances (23 starts), he has a 5-10 record with a 5.39 ERA. On the other hand, this is his worst season in quite some time. And of course, there's also the fact that he spent the last two previous seasons with Texas.

He posted a career-best 10-6 record with a 4.15 ERA during the Rangers' run to the World Series championship. He was stellar in Game 4 of the World Series as well, pitching 5 innings and allowing just 1 earned run in the win.

The Texas Rangers have other options, too. Kumar Rocker is still in the minor leagues, for one. However, if the team wants him to keep developing, Andrew Heaney might be a decent Plan B, especially because the club is familiar with what he has to offer.
