Talk about adding insult to injury for Jacob Latz and the Texas Rangers. It’s not bad enough that Bruce Bochy’s offense is doing another one of its patented disappearing acts. It’s not bad enough that that the team is losing its third straight to a Kansas City Royals team that had lost 6 straight coming into Globe Life. It’s not even bad enough that young phenom Jac Caglianone hit his first Major League home run against the Rangers. But it’s the way he hit the homer that seems quintessentially 2025.
Thursday’s game was always going to be complicated. Shawn Amstrong got the start in a bullpen game and didn’t pitch particularly well to open the game, already going down 2-0 after the first inning. That led Latz to enter in the second inning and he was greeted rather rudely by Caglianone.
Rangers just gave up the weirdest home run of Jac Caglianone’s young career
The Texas Rangers’ reliever allowed the career first home run to Caglianone to lead off the inning and the distance the homer went was bad enough. But it was the fact that the young outfielder put a pitch into the seats that was very, very high.

It was high enough that Cags shouldn’t have swung at it. It was almost above his eyes. It was 4.22 feet above home plate. That’s the second-highest pitch that’s been slapped for a hit this entire season. The highest pitch, 4.26 feet above home plate was also hit for a homer.
For his part, Latz pitched very, very well after that home run that gave the Royals a 3-0 lead. He allowed just two more hits in a career high five innings. But it feels very much like everything else that’s happened this season that the Texas Rangers not only allowed Jac Caglianone’s first career home run, but did it in the weirdest way possible.
