NBA All-Star Cade Cunningham surprisingly purchased minority stake of Texas Rangers
I bet you didn't have ESPN's senior NBA insider Shams Charania breaking Texas Rangers news today on your bingo card. According to Charania, Detroit Pistons All-Star point guard Cade Cunningham has purchased a minority ownership stake of the Rangers, his hometown team. He is one of the athlete investors in Sportsology Capital Partners, which recently completed the purchase of the ownership stake of the Rangers, whose majority owner is Ray Davis.
Cunningham, 24, threw out a first before a Rangers game against the Baltimore Orioles at Globe Life Field last July.
Cunningham is certainly a rich man. He signed a five-year max rookie extension in 2024 that can reach $269 million in value. He also signed a six-year endorsement deal with Nike in November that included a signature shoe deal.
New Texas Rangers' minority investor, NBA All-Star Cade Cunningham, attended high school in Arlington
Cunningham attended Arlington Bowie High School before moving to Florida to attend Montverde Academy. He then played one season at Oklahoma State University before being selected first overall by the Pistons in the 2021 NBA Draft.
Cunningham will compete in his second career All-Star Game on Sunday as a member of the USA Stars. Last season, the Pistons star averaged 26.1 points and 9.1 assists per game en route to finishing seventh in MVP voting. This year, he's averaging 25.3 points and 9.6 assists per game for Detroit, which holds the best record (40-13) in the Eastern Conference by a wide margin, leading the second-place Boston Celtics by 5 1/2 games.
Detroit Pistons All-Star Cade Cunningham joins former United States President George W. Bush, Hall-of-Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan on list of celebrities who have owned part of Texas Rangers
Cunningham joins a list of celebrities who have owned stakes of the Rangers. Former United States President George W. Bush was a part-owner of the franchise from 1989 until 1998, serving as the managing general partner. One of the best starting pitchers of all time, Nolan Ryan, also owned part of the Rangers from 2010 to 2013. He served as the team's president and CEO during that time.
Cunningham's stake in the Rangers is likely relatively small, but it's still cool to see an NBA All-Star take an interest in owning part of the team. Who knows, maybe one day Cunningham will own a larger portion of his hometown team.
