Former Rangers star goes viral after clowning home plate ump

Former Rangers' star Max Scherzer has officially had enough of the bad umpiring epidemic.

So far this year, there hasn’t been much fun to watch for the Texas Rangers and their fans. While the team doesn’t need any more starting pitchers (the rare bright spot for the fourth-place squad) it would be fun to have future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer still in the mix, if for no other reason than he officially does not care whose feelings he hurts.

Scherzer’s stay in Texas was obviously not great as the hurler couldn’t stay healthy. However, plenty of people thought he might have been a nice addition to the squad when he was back out on the free agency market this winter. One has to wonder how he’d react to how the Rangers are playing.

We got a sense of Scherzer’s “don’t give a crap” behavior on Friday night when the former Texas Rangers pitcher was taking in the game for his new team, the Toronto Bluejays. Apparently he wasn’t a fan of some of the calls that home plate umpire CB Bucknor made while teammate Chris Bassitt was on the bump.

Scherzer got caught on camera sitting in the dubout pretending to flip a coin and then depending on whether it came down heads or tails, making a strike or ball call.

One time he flipped the “coin” and it came down on the side where the former Rangers star called it a strike. Another flip, a different call.

Considering that complaints over the accuracy of home plate umpires especially have ramped up over the last few years, it certainty felt like the pitcher was expressing the same frustrations that plenty of other fans and players have felt.

The added bonus is the former Texas Rangers star was poking fun at one of the umpires who is indeed routinely considered among the least accurate in the league despite his long tenure in Major League Baseball.
