Over the last couple of days the Texas Rangers have returned to Earth from there journey to the peak of offensive performance back to a team that was swept in their own building, scoring only five runs against the Kansas City Royals.
This has been perhaps the worst we've seen the Rangers in recent years. Yes, even that 102 loss season a few years back because at least we knew going in they would be bad.
Now it's time for the trade deadline and while Texas is still deciding whether to be sellers or buyers, the general consensus around Major League Baseball is they will sell and boy do they have some pieces to sell.
Nathan Eovaldi and Tyler Mahle could be wearing new jerseys come August
These are two of the Rangers biggest trade pieces even with them currently sitting on the injured list with their own respective injuries.
But the rumors are swirling big times. Most recently, Eovaldi to the Chicago Cubs has not picked up any true steam but since Chicago is looking to improve upon their pitching, Eovaldi, who has a 1.56 ERA in 12 games this season.
As for Mahle, he is one of the best stories in the league this year with his 6-3 record, 2.34 ERA and 56 strikeouts in his 77 innings of work. He could also be a favorite to land with the Cubs or really any other contending team in need of pitching due to his cheap contract.
Marcus Semien on the move?
Long story short, the answer to that question is no. And it's no for a multitude of reasons. One being his status as a fan favorite and face of the franchise while the other is because of his insane contract details.
However, Semien was recently tied to the Big Apple with a potential New York Mets trade. What led to that? Well this idea that the Mets are currently naviagting what to do at second base this year. While Jeff McNeil has been good, Luisangel Acuna isn't off to a shining start.
Semien, despite his ludacris contract, has been a recent hot streak and his pedigree of playing every day, never getting down on himself and being a pretty elite defender could make the Mets interested. Don't see it happening, but in a world where Luka Doncic was traded out of Dallas. Never say never.
Is there a world where the Rangers stand still at the deadline?
There is a world where that happens because it was Chris Young's MO last season when the Rangers were in a similar boat of underperformance but still not as terrible to be immediately known as sellers.
It is different now than in 2024 because they had never experienced offensive woes with this current roster construction. However, this season they are seeing a repeat of woes even after many roster constructions and a change in hitting coach.
Standing still at the deadline could happen but honestly it would be a mistake to do so. Either the Rangers kick it into gear as the All-Star Break nears or they commit to selling. Whatever it is, Young will need to have a good reason for the decision-making.
