The compelling case for the Rangers to trade Corey Seager

The 2023 World Series seems like eons ago.

Just two-and-a-half years ago, Corey Seager was the toast of the town following his World Series heroics, which led the Rangers to their first-ever championship. He also had the post-parade mic drops that endeared him to fans even more.

A lot has happened since then, and Seager, who is in the middle of a massive 10-year $325 million deal, is now being mentioned as a big trading chip as the team closes in on the midway mark of the season. We think it makes sense, and here's why.

Wyatt Langford has surpassed Corey Seager as the face of the Rangers franchise, and Seager doesn't appear to be taking it well

When Seager first arrived in Arlington, he played 151 games. It was the first time since 2017 that he had logged more than 600 at-bats. It sure seemed like he wanted to prove to Ranger brass and the fanbase that the enormous investment would be worth every penny.

Since then, he hasn't played more than 123 games. Injuries happen over a grueling 162-game schedule. But what's concerning about Seager, as he is back on the IL with mild concussion symptoms after what you would call a "fender-bender" more than a collision at home plate ten days ago, is that not only are the injuries frequent, but the healing has been slow.

Over this past weekend, it became even clearer that 24-year-old Wyatt Langford has become the face and future of this franchise, and it appears as if Seager is more than happy to cede the position. Langford is finally 100% healthy and has gone 9 for his last 22. He led the way with three monster homeruns as the Rangers took 2 of 3 from the San Diego Padres.

Meanwhile, Seager is nursing a mysterious injury that has kept him off the field since June 11. The ROI on Seager has yielded positive returns for only two seasons, 2022 and 2023. With the combination of injuries and subpar play, he has been stealing money while spending most of his time watching instead of playing.

It's time to take phone calls for Seager not only because his injuries have become too much of an issue, but because even when he's in the lineup, he looks like his mind is elsewhere. When he has been on the field, he has hit .186/.284/.373. - easily career worsts.

Things began to turn for the fanbase with Seager when it was revealed by sources close to the team that he was instrumental in getting fan-favorite ironman Marcus Semien shipped off to Queens in a purported "it's either him or me" scenario. Seager spends all of his rehab time away from the team with a personal trainer, which doesn't help build a cohesive unit either.

Money shouldn't be an issue, even as the organization is still on the hook for a little more than half of Seager's deal. There would be plenty of deep-pocketed teams like the Dodgers or Yankees that would have Chris Young's number on speed dial. The Bronx Bombers and GM Brian Cashman have been trying to get their mitts on Seager for several years now.

Seager clearly doesn't want to be an everyday player for the Rangers anymore, and the runway from the World Series MVP has run out as Langford takes over the reins as the cornerstone of the franchise. The prospect of getting Seager's remaining deal off the books and either restocking the farm system or bringing in a couple of guys who want to be here is ultra-compelling right now, regardless if the team is a buyer or seller at the deadline on August 3.

It is high time that Ray Davis and Young say, "Thank you for your time here and a terrific 2023 run, now kindly see your way out."
