As one of the top minor league prospects in baseball, Sebastian Walcott has been the focus of most of the talk surrounding the organization's top talents of the future.
But as he deals with a long-term injury, spring training has allowed two other young players to step into that void and show Skip Schumaker what they can do.
Aaron Zavala played last season at Triple-A Round Rock and Double-A Frisco hitting 16 home runs, Cam Cauley played at Frisco and led the team (including Walcott) in extra base hits with 48.
Aaron Zavala and Cam Cauley are using spring training to make a statement
The 2026 spring training sample sizes may not be that big yet, but outfielder Aaron Zavala and middle infielder Cam Cauley have both gotten off to blazing hot starts playing every day.
Zavala, a 25-year-old, 6-foot, 200-pounder from Eugene, Oregon, is hitting an even .500, going 9 for 18 in eight games. He also leads the team with 2 homers and 17 total bases while registering an OPS of 1.471.
Cauley, just 23 and a Texas native from Houston, has also been mashing with a slash of .364/.391/.682. He is second behind Zavala in total bases with 15, including a team-leading four doubles, along with a screaming home run off Seattle ace Logan Gilbert that came off the bat with a 112.9 MPH exit velocity. He has also been playing both short and second base without an error in 16 total chances.
Zavala and Cauley may be longshots to make the Rangers' Opening Day roster, but they are making a case to be called up soon
With versatile utility men like Sam Haggerty, Ezequiel Duran, and Michael Helman all but assured to start the season in Arlington, there may not be enough spots for Zavala and Cauley to make the Opening Day roster.
Still, if they can put together a few more productive weeks together during the spring session, they will undoubtedly leave an impression with Chris Young and Schumaker moving forward.
Should there be early injuries (Josh Jung and Justin Foscue are already out), then both will be on the short list to be call-ups sooner rather than later.
