What does Michael Scott always say? "I'm not superstitious, but I am a little stitious."
Now you can brush off the whole Bruce Bochy every other year magic all you want but history has proven it to be accurate over time.
It started with Bochy winning three World Series titles with the San Francisco Giants in 2010, 2012 and 2014, all while missing the playoffs entirely every year following those titles. It traveled with him to Arlington when Bochy won his fourth ring with the Rangers in 2023 and missed the playoffs last season.
It seems the magic has also played a role for another person; Gold Glove second baseman and Texas Rangers' captain Marcus Semien.
It all starts with Semien back in 2019 when he was with the Oakland Athletics (now Athletics Baseball Club). After a season where he put up average numbers, Semien played in all 162 games for the A's resulting in 33 home runs, 92 RBI's and set a career highs in OPS (.892) and WAR (8.5).
Then like clockwork, the even years that followed were still productive seasons but for some unexplainable reason, the odd years he turned into the best player to every step foot on a baseball field.
His 2021 season with the Toronto Blue Jays was perhaps the best season from a second baseman in Major League Baseball history, playing all 162 games, hitting 39 doubles, 45 home runs (most of any 2B in history) and drove in 102 runs. On top of that he was Gold Glove, Silver Slugger and All-Star for the first time his career, again finishing third in MVP voting.
Here are Semien's numbers in odds year compared to even years, beginning in 2019.
Semien's 2019, 2021 and 2023 seasons:
- 2019: 162 G, .285/.369/.522, 123 R, 187 H, 43 2B, 33 HR, 92 RBI, .873 OPS, 8.5 WAR
- 2021: 162 G, .265/.334/.538, 115 R, 173 H, 39 2B, 45 HR, 102 RBI, .873 OPS, 7.1 WAR
- 2023: 162 G, .276/.348/.478, 122 R, 185 H, 40 2B, 29 HR, 100 RBI, .826 OPS, 7.4 WAR
Semien's 2020, 2022 and 2024 seasons:
- 2020: 53 G, .223/.305/.374, 28 R, 47 H, 9 2B, 7 HR, 23 RBI, .679 OPS, 0.4 WAR (COVID season)
- 2022: 161 G, .248/.304/.429, 101 R, 163 H, 31 2B, 26 HR, 83 RBI, .733 OPS, 5.5 WAR
- 2024: 159 G, .237/.308/.391, 101 R, 154 H, 27 2B, 23 HR, 74 RBI, .699 OPS, 4.1 WAR

Now one thing is for certain after combing through the numbers. Regardless of his counting stats, Semien is still one of the more valuable players in the league and arguably the most valuable second baseman right now. But it still a weird coincidence that for some reason Semien tends to reach that extra gear when the year ends in an odd number. Which is good for Texas this season.
Entering 2025 and his age 34 season, not only is superstition on his side, his work ethic and baseball knowledge play a factor too. That's why I believe Semien is walking into the best season of his career this year.
