It is quite difficult to predict how a player will perform over the course of an arduous 162-game season, but that has never stopped anyone from attempting to make an educated guess.
The Texas Rangers recently tendered all 27 players on the 40-man roster who were not under contract. First baseman Nathaniel Lowe was one of these individuals. Even though many may feel he is a potential trade chip, it is worth wondering what fans should expect from him if he returns in 2025.
Despite a good but not great 2024, Lowe's experience and advanced stats suggest that he could be a dangerous force at the plate once the season starts.
What Rangers fans can reasonably expect from Nathaniel Lowe in 2025
The 29-year-old was the 2022 American League Silver Slugger Award winner, and was also a crucial part of the Rangers' 2023 World Series run. He ended 2024 with a .265 average as well as 16 home runs and 69 RBIs.
These marks seem modest compared to the accolades he's won over the past few seasons, but it is important to note that he ended the year with a red-hot September that saw him slash .310/.413/.517.
"It's all about how you finish. I finished strong, so I'm proud of my finishing effort. I think September turned out pretty nicely, splits wise," Lowe told MLB.com in October. "But, you know, I -- we were done a week and a half ago, so I got a chance to like, kind of, I guess, play for me instead of play for the bigger goal. You never really want to do that. So it would have been nice to be in contention and have a chance to play in the Postseason.”
Even though Lowe may not have been happy about the season, he is clearly a player who has the sort of real big game experience that will keep him collected through peaks and valleys.
He also ranked in the 97th percentile in terms of BB% last season. Fangraphs currently projects that he will hit 21 home runs next season. But, if he is able to maintain this level of discipline at the plate, it is not a stretch to suggest that he may eclipse the initial projections.
Lowe's torrid September, past experience, and approach at the plate could help him put together a solid 2025. But, it may not be entirely fair to expect stellar results instantly. He will slug, but it may take a moment for the Norfolk native to heat up.
