With the month of April coming to a close, we’ll take a look at AL West power rankings through 4/29.

This being our first power ranking, let’s outline some quick guidelines for the rankings. The power rankings combine long-term performance with the team’s last week of play. We’ll look at record, run production, pitching quality and strength of past schedule.

(13-10). Previous: N/Ath. Texas Rangers. 1. team. 126. The Texas Rangers starting rotation has been a big catalyst propelling them towards some important wins. Currently the sit at the top of the AL West with a .5 game lead on the Seattle Mariners. Maintaining production at the top of the order will be a big key in keeping Texas on the road to a second straight AL West title. Coming off of a rough week that saw them get swept and have a triple play turned on them, the Rangers will be looking to bounce back moving forward.

team. 62. The Seattle Mariners are the team with the best record over the past week and are only hurt in this by their rough start. Pitching has been phenomenal from the Mariners allowing just 2 runs or less in 4 of their last 7 games. Maintaining that pitching quality could have Seattle leapfrogging the Rangers in the division very quickly.. (12-10). Previous: N/Ath. Seattle Mariners. 2

102. The Angels are currently sitting fourth in the AL West but have played well of late which places them third in our ranking. They’re in the middle of a series with the Texas Rangers and just came off of a big time sweep of the Kansas City Royals where they outscored their opponent 19-7. Keeping up offensive production and pairing it wth some of the quality pitching they’ve gotten out of their starters will propel them into the top of this division.. (11-12). Previous: N/Ath. Los Angeles Angels. 3. team

(13-12). Previous: N/Ath. Oakland Athletics. 4. team. 96. The Oakland Athletics come in fourth in our first edition power ranking of the 2016 season. They’re coming off of a bad week that saw them go 3-5. Limiting run damage will be the key for the A’s as they chase the top of the division considering they gave up 5 runs or more in 6 of their last 8 games. Allowing that many runs is not going to give you a chance to win many games.

Houston Astros. 5. team. 135. With expectations so high for the Houston Astros heading into the 2016 season, the ‘Stros have struggled to repeat the early season success of last year. Starting pitching has been the issue so far with no starters posting a sub 3.75 ERA and ace Dallas Keuchel sitting at 2-3 with 4.41 ERA. For Houston to rebound, pitching will have to tighten up, to allow their offense a chance to win games.. (7-17). Previous: N/Ath
