The Texas Rangers have wrapped up their first game of Spring Training. They came up short and lost 7-5 against the Kansas City Royals. A solid performance but there’s a lot of room for improvement.

Martin Perez pitched 2.0 innings, allowing four hits, surrendering two runs, and striking out zero batters. A.J. Griffin also pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and surrendering three runs. He managed to strike out one batter. Obviously not a good start, but at least the Texas Rangers coaching staff know where and what these two pitchers needs to improve on.

Sam Dyson, Alex Claudio, and Anthony Bass each pitched one inning. Dyson and Claudio didn’t allow a hit and didn’t surrender any runs. Dyson recorded one strikeout. Bass allowed two hits, surrendered two runs, and struck out two batters. All three of them performed well. Of course, they’ll improve and perform better next time they play.

Offense registered a total of five hits and they scored five runs. Rougned Odor, Carlos Gomez, Nomar Mazara, Mike Napoli, Joey and Jonathan Lucroy played a bit and each had one hit. A few other prospects played, but none of them registered a hit. Will Middlebrooks started at third base and went 0-for-3. A few players were used as pinch runners. As I said earlier, a very solid performance from the team. At one point they trailed 5-0 but they managed to come back and tie it, but they did end up losing. But a very positive performance, nonetheless.

Tomorrow, they take on Kansas City again. They need to avoid falling behind in the early going. They’ll need to register more hits and score some runs. In any case, everyone needs to be ready. Yes, it’s only the second game of Spring Training, but players need to take every game very seriously.

First thing to remember for each player is that they’re NOT guaranteed anything.
