He’s back, but is he ready to take back the closer role in Arlington? The Rangers have activated relief pitcher Sam Dyson from the disabled list on Friday.

On April 16, Texas Rangers relief pitcher Sam Dyson injured his hand while blowing his third save of the season. He was put on the 10-day disabled list, but has returned after two rehab appearances.

The 28-year-old relief pitcher is back with the Rangers, but might not be returning to high leverage situations. According to Jeff Wilson, manager Jeff Banister had this to say about Dyson’s role with the Rangers.

“The Rangers will wait to see how Dyson’s bruised pitching hand recovers from back-to-back outings Monday and Tuesday with Triple A Round Rock before deciding if he will be reinstated.”

On Monday, Dyson pitched a scoreless inning, but three 10 of his 19 pitches for balls. He allowed a run on two hits in his outing on Tuesday. Dyson believes he can still get big league hitters out, but Banister and the Rangers will likely take it slow.

According to Jeff Wilson, Sam Dyson said this about his recent rehab stint. “I think it was pretty positive,” Dyson said. “Just re-group the mind and body and go. I’ve thrown a lot over the last week, so physically I don’t feel like I’ve missed a beat. Yeah, I’m definitely ready to come back up here and contribute.”

This season Dyson has pitched in six games, blown three saves, and has allowed 13 earned runs in 4.1 innings. Relief pitcher Matt Bush has taken over the closer role, and will continue to pitch in that role even with Dyson returning.
