Texas Rangers: Martin Perez Is Headed To The Disabled List

The Texas Rangers place starting pitcher Martin Perez on the 10-day disabled list. Texas is currently in New York City playing a three-game series with the New York Yankees. Perez was not due to pitch in this series. He was due to pitch in game four of Texas’ next series in Cleveland. Now it won’t happen. A replacement hasn’t been announced yet.

According to ESPN, Perez suffered an injury to his non-throwing hand in the team’s hotel. Apparently, the nail on his right thumb tore off when he rammed his hand into the door of his room when it apparently jammed. It’s not only the nail, but also the tip of the bone in his thumb was fractured in the process. Even though the injury is not very serious, the Texas Rangers are not taking any chances.

MLB.com reports that Perez is unable to put on a glove on his injured hand and Perez, himself, stated he can’t do anything with his injured hand. Obviously, it’s a very hard pill for Perez to swallow.

Perez, 26, is 4-6 with a 4.70 ERA. He’s currently fifth in the league in allowing hits with 104. His allowing of 46 runs this season places him in a tie for 36th. He’s also tied for 79th in strikeouts with 61.

Perez is currently on a two-game winning streak. In his last two games, he’s allowed eight runs in 16 hits, striking out eight batters, pitching 11.1 innings. Perez is on a mission to rectify what was a horrible 2016 season, where he finished 10-11 and not pitching in the playoffs. This season started off rough as he was 0-2. At one point, he was 2-6. Now that he’s 4-6, he’s finally showing signs of improvements. In any case, he must keep it up.

Losing Perez is something Texas wasn’t hoping for. Perez is joining A.J. Griffin. However, Evan Grant reported yesterday that Cole Hamels is returning to the rotation. Hamels is pitching on Monday in Cleveland. While Perez’s replacement on the rotation is still unknown, the Rangers recalled utility player Drew Robinson.
