Today was a pretty interesting day for the Texas Rangers. They got their first win of 2012 in a 16-3 romp of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and in doing so let everyone know exactly how powerful their lineup is. I knew how powerful it is, you know how powerful it is, but what I didn’t know was how powerful it can be when guys that played in High-A ball last year are smacking the ball around.
Connor Jackson, who is fighting for a roster spot, started the fireworks display with his first homer of Spring Training. Jackson has a career slash line of .271/.351/.407 and is definitely playing hard to impress Wash. I like him.
Yangervis Solarte, a switch hitting outfielder from Venezuela, also homered off of Diamondbacks’ pitcher Ortega. Next up at the Home Run Derby was young Leonys Martin. Martin was signed to a whopping $15.5 million deal early last year and will hopefully become the center fielder of the future for the Rangers. He showed some power today with the home run, and a little speed in the outfield chasing a deep fly ball hit to the big part of CF.
All of this talent coming from the younger guys is really exciting. A while back, I posted about the Rangers being set up to contend for a long time and now we are finally getting to see why. These guys are amazing.
Matt Harrison and Co. also did exceptionally well, you can find a full recap of the game here. Stay thirsty my friends, Go Rangers.
