The Texas Rangers announced today that second baseman Jurickson Profar will undergo surgery to correct this issues he’s been having with this shoulder. This will likely mean he’ll miss the entire 2015 season. Even before this news he wasn’t expected to return to the Rangers until sometime around the All-Star break. Profar was starting to show improvement and was able to throw from 105 feet without discomfort. But, after a recent MRI showed strain on the subscapularis muscle in his right shoulder it was decided to shut him down and repair the issue finally with surgery.
Last year around this time when Profar was having issues surgery was an option, but he tried to work through the issues and focus on strengthening his upper body. By late spring, he had injured it simply by getting out of bed causing him have another set back on his return in 2014. By late season, he was still having issues and again in September it was recommended that he opt for surgery, but again he declined.
This opens the door pretty wide for Rougned Odor to take over for Jurickson Profar, before now some thought that Profar would have a chance to win his spot back, but now you have to wonder will he ever play again for the Rangers. It’s going to be very tough to regain his form after missing two seasons. And it’s not like he’s even been playing in the minors, he basically will have been sidelined for two seasons now.
Hopefully after he’s fully recovered he’ll be able to bounce back pretty quick. I think he is a very talented player who has just had some bad luck with a nasty injury that he should have had taken care of a while back. Once he does come back it wouldn’t surprise me if he was playing on another team, right now the Texas Rangers have a lot of talent in the middle-infield ready to step up in Profar’s absence.
