Dillon Gee For Jurickson Profar?
News came out late Monday night that the Mets and Rangers could be discussing a trade with the two main pieces being 28-year old righty starter Dillon Gee coming to the Rangers, and the highly talented, but oft-injured Jurickson Profar heading to the Mets.
The news was first reported by Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish, who says that there could also be some “additional pieces” coming back to Texas if this trade were to take place, but he does not mention any specific pieces.
Dillon Gee is signed for another two seasons, and is set to make $5.3M in 2015. Profar on the other hand has yet to reach arbitration, and won’t become a free agent until after the 2019 season. The move is risky for both sides, with the Mets banking on Profar’s health in the future (he will likely miss the entire 2015 season), while Texas would be banking on the injury woes continuing.
While I’m not sold on this potential move, especially without knowing what the additional pieces involved are, there are some bright spots in the plan. With Rougned Odor and potentially Delino DeShields manning second base, the Rangers may have the position handled both in the present, and in the future, with Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre covering short and third. Odor just turned 21 last month, and is under team control for one more year than Profar.
As for Dillon Gee, he’s been a decent pitcher in his career, posting a 40-34 record in five big-league seasons, with a cumulative 3.91 ERA and a 1.288 WHIP. He would likely slide into the fourth spot into the rotation, behind Yovani Gallardo, and represents an upgrade over Colby Lewis (54-58, 4.84 in nine seasons). Gee has pitched his entire career thus far in the National League, which is not as offense-heavy as the AL, which could be a bit worrisome. This worry manifests itself even more with the destination being Arlington, Texas, where the ball tends to fly when the temperatures rise.
Nothing has been made official by any means, and it could possibly take until the end of spring training for a deal to be completed, if at all.
