Texas Rangers’ pitcher, Tanner Scheppers will miss at least the first half of the season after tearing cartilage in his left knee.

According to MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan, Texas Ranger reliever, Tanner Scheppers, tore cartilage in his left knee and is to return to Texas to have surgery. Expectations are for this injury to keep Scheppers out until at least after the All-Star break. GM Jon Daniels is quoted as saying that “He can’t think of a moment that he tweaked it.”

Scheppers was limited last season as well with a bone bruise in his left knee. The belief is that these two injuries are unrelated and Scheppers had his knee examined in last September and there was no issue then.

Last season, Scheppers appeared in 42 games for the Texas Rangers and posted a 5.63 ERA striking out 32 and walking 23 in 38.1 innings. This will go as the third season however that Scheppers will be limited by his health. In 2014, he dealt with elbow inflammation which limited him to 23 innings in which he posted a 9.00 ERA.

Despite these less than stellar numbers, this does serve as a blow for the Texas Rangers heading into the 2016 season. Scheppers was expected to possibly play a role in the bullpen come Opening Day. He was seen as a good depth piece in a bullpen that is already fairly deep. Where the Rangers are helped is that they signed righty Tom Wilhelmsen strengthening their bullpen heading into this season.
