On March 4th, MLB Pipeline released their rankings for the Texas Rangers’ prospect system.

The Texas Rangers Top 5 prospects included everyone expected with Joey Gallo, Lewis Brinson, Nomar Mazara, Dillion Tate, and Luis Ortiz all making an appearance. One surprise in the top 5 was Lewis Brinson coming in at number 2, one spot ahead of Nomar Mazara. The reasoning was that Brinson is a much better overall fielder and runner, albeit his hitting being slightly below Mazara’s. This could be a great thing, as Mazara has been mashing in Spring Training. So far, he’s 8-9 with a home run and 4 RBIs.

A surprise in the top 10 is Jairo Beras coming in at number 6. Beras signed a $4.5 million bonus in 2012, when he was only 18. Questions still linger about how much potential Beras has and how likely it is for him to develop into his full potential. Last year playing in Low A, he did exceptionally well, hitting .291 in 327 at bats, with 9 home runs. He’s expected in the Majors in 2018.

Possibly during winter of 2016, when all of Gallo, Brinson, and Mazara are called up, the new number 1 prospect will be Dillon Tate, who was drafted number 4 overall in last year’s draft. He is the #36 overall prospect, and the #8 RHP prospect. Tate is projected to be future number two pitcher in a major league starting rotation or a possible closer depending on how his stamina develops. Texas Rangers fans can expect to see him come 2017 season.
