Young prospect Joey Gallo has been showing off the power he’s notorious for so far in Spring Training.

Joey Gallo came into Rangers Spring Training with something to prove according to most. Last season, in his brief stint in the big leagues, Gallo hit .204 with 6 homeruns and 57 strikeouts. His struggle to be even somewhat consistent at the plate led many to believe that he might not be all that was expected of him or even the best prospect in the Rangers system any longer.

Fast forward to 2016 Spring Training and Gallo has shown that he’s worked to change his approach at the plate from a free swinging homerun junkie, to a power threat with the ability to control his swing.

So far in Spring Training, Gallo has had 21 at-bats across 10 games. He’s currently hitting .333 and has homered 3 times in the last 4 games including his most recent off of lefty pitcher Tom Gorzelanny of the Cleveland Indians. In this small sample size he’s dropped his strikeout rate from 46% in 2015 to 28% this Spring Training. Along with that, he’s increased his walk to strikeout ratio with a 6 walks to go along with his 6 strikeouts. In 123 at-bats in 2015, Gallo only had 15 walks.

This is a big positive for Texas Ranger fans because it shows that he has the ability to make the adjustments he needs to and mature as a player. Moving forward into 2016, Gallo will play a big role for Texas because of his versatility on the field and having him play at such a high level could be the difference in some games for the Rangers.
