The 2017 trade deadline is just a few weeks away, and major moves could be looming for the Texas Rangers. If the performance doesn’t pick up the team could be big-time sellers at the deadline.

The rumors are starting to heat up and the Texas Rangers are getting major headlines. Reportedly if the team doesn’t pick up their performance then general manager Jon Daniels will sell at the deadline.

The Rangers reportedly have starting pitchers Yu Darvish and Cole Hamels on the trade block. If the team can’t get back in the race then the organization would like to move both pitchers. Is this a smart move for the Rangers?

This season Darvish is 6-8 with a 3.49 ERA in 18 starts with 125 strikeouts. The down part is that Darvish is eligible for free agency after the season. No long-term agreement has been reached and it looks like the 30-year-old starter will hit the open market this winter.

This off-season Darvish is expected to land a deal around five years $150 million. No extension in sight the Rangers should move Darvish, and attempt to re-sign him in the off-season. At least if the Rangers fail to re-sign him the team got a package of players in return via trade.

The other man involved in these rumors could bring back an even bigger return. Hamels is signed through 2019 and could draw interest from plenty of organizations. It’s hard to acquire a veteran pitcher with playoff experience that’s affordable.

Many free agent pitchers are getting $30 million a year on the free agent market. Hamels is owed $23.5 million next year and has an option for $20 million in 2019. That’s a steal for a four-time All-Star and World Series champion.

It’s hard to imagine the Rangers staying competitive this season. Trading both Darvish and Hamels is a must unless an extension is reached with Darvish. The Rangers could potentially get organization changing prospects in these deals.

It’s time to sell in Arlington and build for a bigger and brighter future. The Rangers need to trade Darvish and Hamels by the end of July.
