Despite strong numbers in the minors this season the Rangers have decided to trade outfielder Travis Snider. How will this move impact the organization, and was it the right call?

It has been a busy last couple of weeks for the Texas Rangers organization. They keep the moves coming as the team has traded outfielder Travis Snider to the New York Mets. In exchange for Snider the Rangers will receive cash considerations.

This season Snider is hitting .294 with nine home runs and 44 RBI in 100 games in Triple-A Round Rock. He’s collected over 100 hits this season and has been tearing the cover off the ball in the minors.

The last two seasons Snider has spent in the minors. He hasn’t played in the MLB since 2015 with Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Snider is a former 1st round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays from the 2006 amateur draft.

He has failed to live up to the hype of being a 1st round pick. In parts of eight MLB seasons Snider is hitting .244 with 54 home runs and 212 RBI. He has a career 4.7 WAR, but can’t seem to get back into the Majors.

The Rangers felt Snider was not going to make it on their 25-man roster and traded him elsewhere. Not a terrible decision as the outfield in Arlington is crowded and Snider wouldn’t likely see much playing time in Texas.

The negative is that the Rangers are in a playoff race, and injuries could happen at any time. Having an experienced player like Snider was good for the organization. They had depth in case of an injury, and Snider was hitting the cover off the ball.

Regardless, not a huge move for the Rangers and shouldn’t have much of an impact at all. It is surprising the Rangers weren’t able to get more than just cash for Snider. Hopefully he will get a better opportunity in New York.
