Bartolo Colon continues to shine in the Texas Rangers rotation after putting up a quality performance Saturday against the Blue Jays.

Bartolo Colon made his 4th start of the season for the Rangers picking up a 7-4 win against the Toronto Blue Jays. Colon, in the start, went 7 strong innings allowing just 3 runs on 6 hits. Big Sexy, as he is affectionately nicknamed, has continued to show himself as arguably the most consistent pitcher on the Rangers staff this season. His worst outing came on April 21st when he allowed 4 runs in 5.2 innings taking a no decision. With that being his worst outing, he has continued to allow Texas chances to win games.

Bartolo, who was signed in the offseason, has a 2.87 ERA which is the lowest among pitchers who have made starts this season. At 44-years old, Colon was added purely as pitching staff depth and started out the season in the minors. The plan for Bartolo was to start occasionally when needed, then work from the bullpen as well, but due to injuries, he was thrust into the starting rotation with regularity. Because of his quality starts, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Rangers continue to use Bartolo as a starter and transition another pitcher into the bullpen.

At only $1,750,000 per year as his salary, Colon ranks as the 104th highest paid starter in baseball according to Sportrac which makes his value this season incredible. He doesn’t have overpowering stuff, with a fastball that rarely reaches 90 MPH, Colon has shown how he has refined his pitching as a crafty veteran. He’s gone above and beyond the idea that he is just insurance and a fun name for fans to get to watch. Here’s hoping that Big Sexy can continue his success on the mound and help this team right the ship moving forward this season.
