Texas Rangers: Updates on the Injuries for the Big League Roster
The Texas Rangers have been plagued by injuries again in 2018. With the end of the season here, here’s a quick update on current injuries.
Approaching the end of August and the end of the season, we’re taking a look at the injuries within the Texas Rangers organization at the highest level. The names that you would expect to see on the active roster were they not injured are the focus of this injury report.
Bartolo Colon (Back Strain; 10-day DL) The Rangers put Bartolo on the DL on August 24th meaning he can’t return until early September. The veteran has been fairly serviceable for Texas this year as a starter and when he comes back, likely could still make a start or two. At his age though, he’ll be in no rush himself to get back from this bat strain.
Outlook: Early September
Doug Fister (Strained Knee; 60-day DL) Fister went on the DL with a strained knee on June 10th with hopes to return this season. His knee never really improved however which has forced him to end his season early. Moving into 2019, the Rangers have a $4.5 million team option that they can pick up or they can exercise his $500,000 buyout.
Outlook: Out for Season
Matt Bush (Right Elbow Strain; 60-day DL) Matt Bush was put on the 60-day DL with a right elbow strain back in early July. Not much news has been heard about him since but Levi Weaver of The Athletic reported he had begun playing catch about a 10 days ago. While no official time table has been placed on Bush’s return, it looks like a long shot that he comes back in 2018. Texas won’t risk him re-injuring his pitching elbow in a scrapped season.
Outlook: Out Indefinitely

Joey Gallo (Left Ankle Sprain; DTD) Gallo exited the game on Friday, August 24th after spraining his left ankle. It doesn’t seem like a DL stint is imminent but he was held out of the lineup on Saturday.
Outlook: Day-To-Day
Tony Barnette (Strained Shoulder; 60-day DL) Barnette was put on the 60-day DL with a strained lat muscle on July 8th. Like Matt Bush, not a whole lot has been heard from Barnette since he went down. TR Sullivan reported that Barnette is with the Rangers on their current road trip but is limited to flat ground work.
Outlook: End of August
Delino DeShields (Fractured Finger; 10-day DL) Delino hit the DL on August 17th which means he’s eligible to come off the DL at the end of the month. He fractured the tip of his middle finger on his right hand and no official timetable has been announced for his return.
