Bruce Bochy is officially not returning as the manager for the Texas Rangers next season. While replacing the future Hall of Famer will be a difficult, it's a necessary step to get the Rangers back to the top of Major League Baseball.

Bochy is an all time great manager that lead the Rangers to their best season ever two years ago. He was beloved by fans for what he did for this team but his era in Texas is now over.

There are internal options to replace him as well as many outside of the franchise. President of baseball Operations Chris Young will likely make the search for the new manager get done quickly and there are a few guys who fit all the boxes.

3 potential candidates for Rangers managerial opening

Skip Schumaker

The former Marlins manager that has had success at being a manager before is the prime candidate for the job. He is already employed in the Rangers front office and may have made his claim long before Bochy was officially out and is only 45 years old.

He is without a doubt a fan favorite to take the job. His time in Miami ended abruptly but the large turnover to the front office likely lead to the split. His managerial record is 146-178 but that does not paint the whole picture.

The Marlins in 2024 were built for failure and Schumaker could not elevate them above that. His 84-78 record in 2023 is more indicitive of who he is as a manager. He is a great candidate to further his coaching career in Arlington while growing with the franchise in its current state.

Bob Melvin

Following the 2025 season, Melvin was let go from the Giants manager spot. Rangers fans are more than familiar with Melvin after his incredible stint as the Athletics manager from 2011-2021.

He has the experience that would be handy for the current state of the Rangers roster. The Athletics never paid for a lot of talent and he always had to get the most out of what he had. Rumors of the Rangers shedding payroll could make this skill of his invaluable.

Chris Young showed he preferred a veteran when he hired Bochy originally. If he wants to go down that route again, then Melvin is a perfect candidate. Gettin him back to the AL West is a potential outcome for the Rangers franchise.

Mark DeRosa

DeRosa is a current media member, but that has not stopped the Rangers before. Bret Boone stepping in as the hitting coach this year showed Chris Young isn't afraid to make a move like this. The most out of the box hire possible has some real ties to the franchise.

He enjoyed 2 productive seasons in 2005 and 2006 for the Rangers. He has the chops to make it as a MLB level manager and has had a great showing managing Team USA in the 2023 season. He will return as their manager for the 2026 World Baseball Classic as well.

His former players from 2023 speak highly of him. He has noted that he wants to get back into managing for the 2026 WBC and is very excited. If he truly wants to get into managing full time, there are a lot of jobs open and he will likely get looks at multiple of them.

He would get essentially a new look Rangers team for 2026. There are going to be contracts that will not be renewed for the 2026 season and new faces will step in. There is enough top end talent to sway him to take the job and potentially make this job his own.
