Chris Young sought to buy pitching at the deadline with pitching. It saw the departure of top pitching prospects such as Kohl Drake, Mitch Bratt, David Hagaman, Mason Molina, Skylar Hales, and Garrett Horn.
With the departure of so many arms that were ranked prospects in the system, somebody is expected to rise in the ranks to replace them.
There have been breakout prospects in the system all year and new additions in the draft. Analyzing the farm system makes a couple of arms stick out up above the rest.
Who is the next top Rangers pitching prospect?
AJ Russell
Russell was a draft darling of many scouts and journalists. The right hander from Tennessee has daunting stuff that pops when he pitches. His only problem in college was being available.
His injuries stacked up and have been long talked about but based on his second round draft slot, the Rangers are not worried they will continue. Drafting starters who have already had Tommy John is being universally done throughout baseball and is not out of the ordinary.
Russell in my eyes is organization proof. His stuff would play in any ball park and will only get better in time. His 60 grade slider and fastball play off his 50 grade splitter wonderfully. He is the most intriguing arm the Rangers drafted outside of the first round in some time.
Seong-Jun Kim
The arm that is most intriguing for many reasons in the system is Kim. He is a 2 way player out of Korea that scouts are split on where he will stick, At just 18 years old, the future is so bright.
Chris Young and company used leftover money originally intended for Roki Sasaki this offseason to sign Kim in international free agency. His athleticism that allows him to play shortstop will only help his development as a pitcher.
With an arsenal consisting of a fastball, slider, curveball, and splitter. His fastball is up to 95 despite his frame that isn't nearly as filled out as it will be in the future. He is the most under the radar prospect the Rangers have that could be a top hitter in the organization, the top pitcher, or both.
Caden Scarborough
Drafted in the 6th round in 2023, Scarborough has flown very far under the radar despite gaining ground on that top prospect spot. Currently grading out as the 11th best prospect in the system, he is striking out hitters efficiently while limiting base runners in A ball at 20 years old.
He currently has flashed a 55 grade fastball along with a 50 grade curveball and slider. His 6 foot 5 185 pound frame has not been nearly fleshed out enough and is only trending up. Once he begins adding on weight, his stuff will be taken to the next level.
He has a high level athletic background and crept under the radar as an amateur as well. He is still growing as a player while already quickly establishing himself as a name to be known.
