Now that the trade deadline is over, we can finally breath and give a proper examination of the Texas Rangers' deadline deals.
What started off a slow burn, Texas ended up being one of the most active teams in the final hour of the deadline, acquiring three pitchers in three separate deals. It even included a false Adolis Garcia trade rumor.
The first was around 5:20 p.m. CT when Texas acquired left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe from the Minnesota Twins. An hour later the Rangers grabbed Merill Kelly from the Diamondbacks and rounded out the deadline in the final 10 minutes with more bullpen help in St. Louis' Phil Maton.
Rangers trade for Twins' reliever Danny Coulombe
It seemed Texas would be hampered by Ray Davis' unwillingness to exceed the luxury tax as it took until the final hour of the trade deadline.
Then they broke through the seal trading for Twins' Danny Coulombe. The 35-year-old left-handed reliever is in the middle of his 11th season in MLB and during the 2025 season with Minnesota he has a 1.16 ERA and a 9.0 K/9 ratio in 40 appearances.
A much-needed add, Coulombe will give Texas a lefty specialist at the backend of the bullpen. Something that a team is always in search of.
Rangers add to league's top rotation with D-backs' Merrill Kelly
The big acquisition of Merrill Kelly was a bit of a shock for Rangers' fans as it wasn't really known that the starting rotation was a big need for Texas. Seen as one of the best in baseball with a 3.16 ERA, Texas already has Nathan Eovaldi, Jacob deGrom and a resurgent Patrick Corbin. Adding Kelly to that list puts them on top of the conversations for best rotations.
Kelly, 36, will be a free agent at the end of the season so it is a rental for Texas but I am sure if they are able to use the right-hander as a vital piece to a second World Series title, it will not matter.
They did have to pay quite the price, sending three pitching prospects to Arizona in the deal. Included is Texas's No. 5 overall prospect in Kohl Drake, No. 9 prospect in Mitch Bratt and No. 13 prospect in David Hagaman.
Phil Maton headed to Texas to round out bullpen
To close out the trade deadline, Texas added a rather controversial figure in Arlington with former Astros' reliever Phil Maton. Take the Astros past out of the equation, he is also the pitcher who hit Josh Jung with a fastball last year that kept Jung out for most of the 2024 season.
Regardless, Maton is still having a tremendous season with a 2.35 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 48 strikeouts in 40 games this season.
In exchange, Texas parted ways with 22-year-old lefty Mason Molina, 23-year-old right-hander Skyler Hales and some international slot money. Maton will join Coulombe in the back half off the bullpen alongside Robert Garcia, Cole Winn and Holby Milner.
