The Texas Rangers are officially one of the hottest teams in baseball right now. After completing a three-game sweep of the Athletics on Wednesday, they have won 8 of their last 10 games and are scoring runs in bunches.
Several Rangers are playing better baseball as of late, but three guys in particular have gotten red hot just in time to ensure that the organization will be buyers ahead of the July 31 Trade Deadline.
Corey Seager has put the Rangers on his back
Seags was having a subpar season by his standards over the first two or three months. But in July, he has been terrific, hitting .368, raising his batting average from .249 to .275. His slash over July has also been outstanding at ..456/.720/1.176
After dealing with a nagging hamstring injury for most of the first half, he appears to have put that behind him, often stretching long singles into doubles while playing a plus shortstop. This team will go as far as Seager takes them, and that is why he commands over $30 million a year.
Patrick Corbin stepped up when Texas needed him most
Patrick Corbin has quietly been one of the best stories for the Rangers this year. The 36-year-old left-hander has been solid as a rock at the bottom of the team's stellar starting rotation. He's been even better in July.
Since July 5, the Rangers have won all 4 of his starts. His ERA has come down from 4.18 to 3.78 and he has shown much better command walking just 5 batters while fanning 22. over 22.1 innings pitched.
Kyle Higashioka has been the surprise Texas Rangers hero at catcher
Higgy just suffered a mild hamstring strain that may keep him out a few games, but before that, the veteran backstop has been a hitting machine in the weeks before the deadline.
Higashioka has been almost as good as Seager and has forced Bruce Bochy's hand, seeing more time at catcher and DH just to keep his hot bat in the lineup. In July, he raised his average from .216 to .253 while smashing 3 homers and driving in 9 runs.
