June is a month of serious decision making for a Major League Baseball team. The All-Star Game and Trade Deadline slowly approach and an organization needs to make a choice of who to sell or who to buy.
This month is even more important for the Texas Rangers as they are 29-31 and three games out of the AL West division as they get ready to kick off a three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.
A first step would be to determine whether these three players still have what it takes to make meaningful contributions toward a potential playoff push. If not, there needs to be changes.
3 Rangers players in danger of losing their spot this month
Ezequiel Duran
Duran continues to find his way onto the Texas Rangers roster, whether it's in the minors or majors over the past couple of years. Loyalty matters and Texas would have faltered without the play of Duran in the first half of the 2023 season, but that has run its course.
Duran provides a good utility glove or perhaps one of the strongest arms on the team but his hitting is pretty poor and continually calling him up is taking away opportunities for others. The 26-year-old is currently hitting .114 for the Rangers in a small 35 at-bat sample size, but regardless when does get shots, he isn't producing.
I'd rather throw a utility infielder like Justin Foscue on the roster and play him in the same capacity they are playing Duran. Foscue has better potential and if he struck lightning in a bottle, he could see more playing time.
Adolis Garcia
The slugging outfielder, Garcia's tough season has continued into the third full month of the season and he's seeing the consequences of such. He was benched the entire weekend against the Cardinals and unfortunately for him, it worked. The Rangers exploded for 19 runs in three games and won their first series since May 12-14 against Colorado.
In 197 at-bats this season, Garcia is hitting .208 with seven homers and 24 RBIs with a .628 OPS, 54 strikeouts and 11 walks. He still provides an insane amount of depth in the outfield with plus speed and one of the best arms in baseball.
It would be tough to see the former postseason hero get released or traded elsewhere but the last one and 1/3 seasons for Garcia has been dreadful to watch and at 32 years old, it might be time to part ways.
Luke Jackson
Once the defacto closer for the Texas Rangers coming into the season has since not only lost his spot but also might have crept some doubt into Bruce Bochy's mindset going forward.
Jackson, a once former first rounder by the Rangers, started the season with six saves when April ended, which at the time was among the league leaders. Since then his numbers have been less than stellar. In his last 15 games, Jackson has a 5.23 ERA in 10 1/3 innings of work.
He was hurt in May after throwing one pitch and getting hit by a comeback liner but thankfully avoided any further damage. He's been better since his return while he's been used in various spots over his last seven appearances but Jackson is on a one-year deal and Texas could easily part ways with him if needed.
