Utility men are maybe the most undervalued players on a major league roster. Having a Swiss Army knife who can play every position on the field gives a team a unique ability to optimize matchups both offensively and defensively. The Texas Rangers have one of the best in Ezequiel "The Solution" Duran.

2026 has been Duran's official coming-out party as he is currently second in all-star voting for second base and has been invaluable with his versatility while the Rangers have dealt with injuries to middle infielders Corey Seager and Josh Smith.

He brings a secret weapon to the table that can't be measured by stats, advanced or otherwise. He just seems to have an innate feel for where he is on the field at all times, and consistently makes the right play regardless of what position he is playing.

Ezequiel Duran's unique abilities have turned him into an uncommon defensive weapon for the Rangers

In Monday's 4-3 win in Miami to start the Rangers' long 9-game road trip, Duran took a perfect throw from left-fielder Alejandro Osuna in shallow left field. He swiveled, quickly crow-hopped, and relayed the ball to Elias Diaz in the perfect spot at 91 mph to strike down the Marlins' Xavier Edwards, who was looking for an inside-the-park homerun to take the lead in the bottom of the 6th. The Rangers held on for a 4-3 win.

It was the second time that he had shown off a bazooka for an arm to nail a runner at home on a relay in the last week, taking another assist from centerfielder Wyatt Langford against the Padres.

When interviewed by RSN's Laura Stickells after the game about the key cannon shot relay throw to preserve a tie game, he responded, "I don't know how I do it, I just turn and throw the ball hard to home plate. Thank you, Jesus!"

When asked about his standing in the All-Star voting, Duran gave an answer that also sums up his rare, Johnny-on-the-spot-like defensive awareness: "That happens when you play hard and you've got mucho energía."

The affable Duran is known in the Rangers' clubhouse as "The Solution". Part of that is in jest, but he does seem to have a second sense of the game, largely due to having played everywhere on the field throughout his five-year MLB career. Still, a lot of that innate ability just comes from being a natural-born ballplayer who is getting to play every day for the first time in three years.

And, by the way, he crushed a big 407-foot two-run homer to straight away center to give Kumar Rocker and the team a 2-0 lead that they would never relinquish. It's time to recognize Duran for everything he is bringing to the field every night with an all-star selection.

You can vote up to five times a day and help Zeke get to Philadelphia and continue what has been a terrific comeback season in 2026.
