Will this be the final month of this catcher's time with the Rangers?

It's been a horrible year for this World Series hero.

Jonah Heim has been the primary backstop for the Texas Rangers since he debuted in 2021 at the age of 26. His defensive prowess has been on display at Globe Life Field for almost five years now, and he has been a decent-hitting catcher as well.

But it appears that Heim may be approaching the end of the road with the club as the team heads into the final month of the 2025 season.

Heim's offensive production has fallen off a cliff in 2025

Now 30 years old, Heim has seen a precipitous decline at the plate this season. And it has been a steady downward trajectory since his career All-Star season in 2023, when he was a key cog on the World Series team.

In 2023, Heim had career bests in almost every major offensive category, hitting .258 with 18 homers and 95 RBIs. In 2024, those numbers began to slide, and this season, Heim is hitting just .224 with nine home runs and 38 RBI. His .615 OPS is among the worst for starting catchers in the entire league.

Heim's replacement is already on the roster, and several catchers will be available this winter

When Chris Young and the organization signed Kyle Higashioka last winter, they were looking for a backup to Heim in hopes that the catcher would move closer to his 2023 production. Now, Higgy appears to be primed to take over for Heim as the club's everyday starter, as he has been better with the bat and just as good defensively.

The team is likely already taking a look at some players who will be free agents this winter, including names like Gary Sanchez, J.T. Realmuto, and former Rangers Carson Kelly and Mitch Garver. All of these backstops make around the same amount of money as Heim, who is arbitration-eligible after this season.

The Rangers also recently signed veteran Omar Narvaez to a minor league deal, and they could be eyeing the former Astro as a potential replacement.

Ranger fans would hate to see Heim go, but he will likely be headed elsewhere unless he is open to taking a pay cut or being relegated to the backup position.
