The process of getting former Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy a bust in Cooperstown is officially underway, as he has been nominated by the Contemporary Era Committee as a finalist for consideration for the Hall of Fame class of 2027. He joins an esteemed group of coaches and executives that includes Joe Maddon, Dusty Baker, Lou Piniella, Sandy Alderson, Ted Turner, Bill White, and Brian Sabean.
Of course, Rangers fans will forever remember Bochy as the skipper who guided the 2023 team to the pinnacle of MLB by winning the organization's first World Series Championship. But Bochy's likely induction was sealed well before he arrived in Arlington.
Bruce Bochy won 4 World Series, 5 pennants, and a Manager of the Year Award over his illustrious career
After a nine-year playing career as a catcher from 1978 to1987 for the Houston Astros, New York Mets, and San Diego Padres, it was clear that Bochy's grasp of the game and deep understanding of its many nuances would eventually lead to him becoming a big-league manager.
He made his debut in the dugout with the Padres in 1995 and claimed his first NL pennant in 1998, winning 98 games. His next stop was up the California coast to the Bay Area with the San Francisco Giants in 2007, where he would win an unbelievable three World Series Championships in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
In 2023, he would arrive at Globe Life Field and helm the Rangers to the top of the mountain for the first time in the 53-year history of the organization since it moved from Washington, D.C., to Texas. The fan-favorite manager would ride off into the sunset after the 2025 season.
Bochy was always a cool, steady hand who earned the respect of his players. He was proud to stand up for his guys and be a player's manager. He also had a particularly uncanny ability to manage bullpens and navigate late innings. He also seemed to always know when to slowly walk out to the mound with the hook at just the right time.
He found a way to galvanize that special 2023 team despite having inherited a collection of very diverse and different personalities. From the fiery Adolis Garcia to the more laid-back Corey Seager and the workmanlike approach of Marcus Semien, Bochy had them all driving toward the same goal night in and night out.
The way the 2023 team took care of business on the road during their magical run underscored his calm and unflinching approach, and his players followed his lead.
Bochy's four World Series titles put him in elite all-time company, matching Joe Torre and Walter Alston. Only legends Casey Stengel (7), Joe McCarthy (7), and Connie Mack (5) have more in the game's history.
Although Bochy finished just a tick below .500 for his career at 2252-2266 (.498), his postseason success makes him a no-brainer first-ballot Hall of Famer. He ranks sixth all-time in wins and won a Manager of the Year Award with the Padres in 1996.
Bruce will have to be patient, however, as the Baseball Writers Association of America (BWAA) won't reveal its ballots until January 19, 2027. The official enshrinement induction ceremony will take place in Cooperstown, NY, on July 25, 2027.
Bochy would be the first Texas Ranger manager to receive the ultimate honor, and it is well-deserved.
