Joc Pederson leadoff twist has run its course, and this Rangers youngster should replace him

If you've been following the Texas Rangers closely this season, it has become painfully obvious that Skip Schumaker can sometimes become locked into a certain way of managing this 2026 club. He will have some success doing something and stick with it past the point where it is an advantage for the Rangers.

As Joc Pederson is mired in a slump for close to a month now, it is time for Schumaker to adjust the starting lineup. Having the slugger in the leadoff spot was great when he was mashing and getting the Rangers off on the right foot with the occasional 1-0 lead, but that isn't happening anymore, and this team is showing that it would be better served with a more traditional leadoff man who is going to get on base more consistently - someone like Cody Freeman.

It's time for Skip Schumaker to replace Joc Pederson in the Rangers' leadoff spot with Cody Freeman

In August, Pederson is 8-for-55 (.145) with 3 home runs and 6 RBI. He has also walked just 9 times. So not only is he not providing the team with a power spark at the top of the order, but he isn't getting on base at a high rate either. If you tack on that the 34-year-old DH/1B has below-average speed, he has become more of a liability in the leadoff spot.

This Ranger team is built more for a traditional contact-driven leadoff hitter. Cody Freeman would thrive in such a role. He has a .348 OBP and would be an ideal candidate to set the table for power hitters Corey Seager, Wyatt Langford, and Brandon Nimmo. Freeman has excellent plate discipline and has a leadoff hitter's mentality. He just wants to get on base, and he approaches each at-bat accordingly. He can also hit for power. Did he make a boneheaded play on the basepaths, getting thrown out at home on Saturday? Yes. But he's an aggressive, instinctual player who will get rewarded for his intrepidness in the future.

With Freeman moving into the 1-hole, you could then move Pederson back into either the 4th or 5th slot, where, if his home run swing returns over the final month of the season, it could be a two- or three-run shot instead of a solo homer. Heaven forbid the Rangers get a Grand Slam this season that wasn't from Denny's. Only the Rangers, Brewers, and Yankees have failed to hit a grand salami this season. It hasn't hampered the Brewers or Yankees that much.

There are a lot of tweaks that Schumaker needs to make to fix this offense before it is too late, but this is a fairly straightforward one that could be implemented immediately. The Rangers are dangerously close to falling too far behind the Astros for the AL West lead and the Guardians for the final wild-card spot.
