The Rangers took a quick break from Cactus League spring training play to take on the WBC Team Brazil on Wednesday, and had their way with them, winning by a lopsided score of 13-4.

Four of those runs came courtesy of Josh Smith homers, as he smashed a big three-run dinger and a solo shot in support of Jacob deGrom, who was making his 2026 debut.

Smith's eruption was just another reminder that even though he may not be known as a power hitter, there is plenty of pop in his bat that can sneak up on opposing pitchers.

Josh Smith homered in the 3rd and 5th innings to help the Rangers cruise to an easy victory

Smith turned on inside pitches from Team Brazil hurlers Victor Takahashi and Hugo Kanabushi, respectively, that cleared the right-field wall to extend the Rangers' lead.

The first came off the bat at 99.8 MPH while the second reached triple digits at 100.8. The game was eventually called after seven innings due to the mercy rule.

Skip Schumaker and Ranger fans know that Smith can hit with power when he gets balls on the inside half of the plate that he can turn on and pull.

Smith has had better power numbers in the first half of the last two seasons

Some have forgotten about Smith's power stroke because he hasn't had it working in the second half of the last two seasons. His power outages have been a big part of his second-half swoons,

Last year, the utility man, who will now be given the opportunity to play every day at second base, played in 144 games and hit 10 home runs. Eight of those long balls came before the All-Star break.

It was the same story in 2024, when he played in 149 games and hit 13 homers. Ten of them came before the calendar turned to August. He went yard just twice in August and September combined.

If Smith can somehow figure out how to say fresh and strong over a full season, he has the potential to be a 15 to 20-home run guy. His two homers against the Brazilian squad are just another reminder that he can be a threat to barrel up bad pitches and hit 400-foot dingers.
