The Texas Rangers are looking to accomplish something that has not been done in over 20 years. The 2000 New York Yankees were the last major league team to repeat as World Series champions. Bruce Bochy's squad will be looking to go back-to-back as they enter the 2024 season with their eyes on another October run.
But maybe Bochy isn't the right guy to lead the Rangers in search of their second straight World Championship. Don't misunderstand. It's not that the future Hall of Fame manager doesn't possess the ability to take Texas back to the Fall Classic, but his record is less than stellar when he's had the opportunity.
Bochy, having led Texas to the World Series title last season, now has four championships to his name. But Bochy has never led a team back to the postseason, much less a World Series championship, after winning the whole thing.
Wild Bruce Bochy stat doesn’t bode well for Rangers’ 2024 season
Bochy took the San Francisco Giants to the World Series in 2010, 2012, and 2014. All three times Bochy walked away with the World Championship. But San Fran did not even return to the playoffs in 2011, 2013 or 2015.
In 2011, Bochy led the Giants to an 86-win season, which was good enough for second place in the NL West. But if you'll remember, that was the year when the Buster Posey rule became the topic of discussion after the Giants' backstop suffer a season-ending injury after a collision at home plate in May of that year. Posey, the Giants best player, appeared in just 45 games.
Bochy's 2013 team went just 76-86 and finished in third place in the division that season. The Giants won 84 games in 2015, but fell short of the MLB postseason that year as the Chicago Cubs claimed the final NL Wild Card spot with a record of 97-65.
But Bochy will get one more chance to make history with a club that has what it takes to repeat as champs in 2024. The Rangers return one of the best lineups in the game and a strong rotation with several top arms expected back later in the year. There are still questions surrounding the Texas bullpen, but those existed last season as well.
If Bochy can lead the Rangers back to pinnacle of Major League Baseball he would join Connie Mack as one of only two managers to win five World Series championships. Let's hope that the fourth time is charm for the Rangers' skipper.
