For the second straight spring, the potential future of the Texas Rangers will be on the national baseball stage at the 2025 Spring Breakout game.

First established last spring, spring breakout is one of Major League Baseball' newest initiative which brings together each team's top prospects for an exhibition game at big league spring training sites in Arizona and Florida.

Last year's Rangers' roster included pitchers Brock Porter and Jack Leiter, Rangers' current top prospect Sebastian Walcott and Dustin Harris among others.

With the Rangers set to play the San Francisco Giants on March 15, who will represent the Rangers this year?

Texas Rangers position players

  • Yolfran Castillo
  • Cameron Cauley
  • Dylan Dreiling
  • Justin Foscue
  • Anthony Gutierrez
  • Dustin Harris
  • Jesus Lopez
  • Malcolm Moore
  • Braylin Morel
  • Abimelec Ortiz
  • Alejandro Osuna
  • Paulino Santana
  • Sebastian Walcott

Top prospect: Walcott

There is zero doubt that the Rangers consensus top pick entering 2025 is the 18-year-old shortstop. Walcott, one of the Rangers international free agent signings back in 2023, has even been named as the league's top prospects from some talent evaluators. Prior to getting reassigned to minor league camp on Monday, Walcott impressed at big league camp, hitting .500 in seven at-bats recording three doubles and hitting a towering home run on Feb. 27 against Seattle that flew off the bat at 107.2 mph and traveled 383 feet. While Walcott has a case to make his MLB debut sometime this year, it would not be unusual to see Texas take their time developing the youngster.

Player who could debut in 2025: Osuna

The 22-year-old outfielder is turning heads in big league spring training this season. In 18 at-bats, he's hit .444 with three RBIs, two stolen bases and playing solid defense around the outfield. Last year, Osuna spend time in A-Ball with Hickory and Frisco, hitting .292 with 18 home runs, 61 runs driven in and 24 doubles. It might seem crazy to think Osuna could be in the big leagues given his highest level of professional ball was High-A, but what he's shown this spring and over the last three seasons in the minors, he seems developed enough to make a genuine case to be a mid-season or September callup this year.

Most to prove in 2025: Foscue

Foscue had a tough go of it in his first taste of big league action last year. Shortly after making his MLB debut in April, Foscue went to the IL with a left oblique strain. When he returned to Arlington later that season he struggled, hitting a tough .048//091/.071 and only recording two hits in 42 at-bats. It gets harder for Foscue, especially when you consider that his chances will be limited since the roster is deep. Even getting that shot is a tough climb because he hasn't really shown he deserves it this spring, hitting .200 and striking out five times.

Texas Rangers pitchers

  • Dane Acker
  • Paul Bonzagni
  • Mitch Bratt
  • Marc Church
  • Jose Corniell
  • Aidan Curry
  • Kohl Drake
  • Skylar Hales
  • Kumar Rocker
  • Winston Santos
  • Josh Stephan
  • Emiliano Teodo
  • Izack Tiger

Top prospect: Rocker

This is the obvious top pitching prospect for Texas but the question is whether the team will choose to send Rocker to the breakout game and instead continue to have him develop in big league camp. Of course, the game is just a one-time exhibition so it's possible especially if they can time it up with his regular pitching schedule. With his early struggles this spring, it might be nice to see if Rocker can gain some confidence playing among the Giants' top hitting prospects. Regardless, Rocker doesn't have much else to prove, he'll likely start the year either in the bullpen or down in Triple-A Round Rock to get more consistent playing time.

Player who could debut in 2025: Teodo

The 24-year-old right hander is making pitching look effortless this spring. In three games, he is yet to give up a run in 2 1/3 innings of work, with a filthy mix of his sinker, which hit 100.8 mph and a high-80s slider. Teodo spent all of last year at Double-A Frisco pitching in 86 1/3 innings, recording a 1.98 ERA, striking out 110 batters and holding opponents to a .178 batting average. A flamethrower with a three-pitch mix, Teodo could be a key youngster in the bullpen if the Rangers ever need to replace an arm or two throughout the season for potential injuries or simply a jolt of energy.

Player with the most to prove in 2025: Porter

The Rangers 2022 fourth round pick hasn't had the most successful beginning to his professional career. The 21-year-old righty has thrown 88 2/3 innings with a main issue being Porter's struggles with walks. At one point Porter was on a fast track to be one of Texas' top prospects but after a tough 2024, he is almost outside the team's top 30, at No. 30 overall. He started last year in A+ Hickory but was demoted to rookie ball and still struggled issuing 11 walks in 11 innings. While his struggles are understandable, still only three years removed from high school, he needs a breakthrough 2025 season to give himself confidence. If not, he's going to have a myriad of hurdles to jump over in order to get back on track.
