Nathan Eovaldi has been nothing short of dominant over his last 6 starts. So much so that Major League Baseball has named the Ranger ace the AL Pitcher of the Month for July.
There was some worry about whether he would suffer from lingering arm issues after a somewhat mercurial stint on the IL in June. Still, in July, Evo has been the best pitcher in baseball, and he continued to be stellar to begin August. getting the 2-0 win against the Bronx Bombers on a near flawless one-hitter.
Nathan Eovaldi dominates the Yankees and proves his point for the Texas Rangers
In his first August start, Eovaldi squared off with perennial MVP candidate Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees. Eovaldi was dominant once again.
He needed just 98 pitches to throw 8 shutout innings, allowing a single flare hit. He pushed his record to 10-3, lowered his ERA to a ridiculous 1.38, and WHIP to .084 while fanning 6. It certainly feels like he is now on the inside track to the AL Cy Young award. It is currently between Evo and Tarik Skubal.
The offense was able to push 2 runs across in the 8th on a Rowdy Tellez single, and Phil Maton came in and got his first save as a Ranger to ensure the win.
Nathan Eovaldi was remarkably consistent in earning the July accolade
In five July starts, Eovaldi was 5-0 with an eye-popping 0.59 ERA and 0.95 WHIP, holding opponents to a .198 batting average, while striking out 30 batters in 30.2 innings pitched.
His .059 ERA for the month is the second-lowest mark for a single month in Texas Rangers history. Only Yovanni Gallardo has been better at .054 in June 2015. Rangers Hall of Famer Kenny Rogers is the only other Texas pitcher to win the award with at least 5 wins and an ERA below 1.00.
Eovaldi is off to a great start in August, trying to win the award back-to-back, but he would trade a hundred pitchers of the month awards for a Cy Young and another shot at a World Series ring.
