Shortstop Sebastian Walcott, the Texas Rangers' top prospect per MLB Pipeline, finally returned to in-game action on Tuesday, going 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in the Arizona Complex League. It marked the 20-year-old's first game since undergoing UCL brace surgery in February.

Walcott, MLB Pipeline's No. 10 overall prospect, returned much sooner than most anticipated when he went down with his torn UCL at the beginning of spring training. At the time of his injury, the Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant reported that Walcott would likely miss most or all of the 2026 season. While it's true that Walcott missed most of the season, Grant seemed to have implied that Walcott would return much later in the year, if at all.
Rangers' Sebastian Walcott is one of the most exciting prospects in MLB
The Rangers signed Walcott for $3.2 million in January 2023. He reached High-A as a 17-year-old in 2023 and was promoted to Double-A Frisco toward the end of the 2024 season. He spent the entire 2025 season with the RoughRiders, slashing .255/.355/.386 with 13 homers, 19 doubles, 59 RBI and 32 stolen bases in 124 games as the youngest batting qualifier in Double-A. Overall, he has posted a .258/.347/.427 slash line in 293 minor league games.
Walcott, a right-handed batter, has a quick swing and has an excellent 65 power grade per MLB Pipeline. Because of his quick swing, he tends to pull the ball when he makes contact.
Walcott, who stands at 6-foot-4, has an amazing 70-grade arm. However, his defense could use some work, as he tends to commit many errors. He'll likely be moved to third base or right field full-time at some point in his career. And while he stole a good number of bases last season, he is projected to be an average runner once he's fully developed.
As exciting as it is to see Walcott return to in-game action, it's very unlikely he will make his MLB debut this year. However, it's not an impossible scenario. If the Rangers are still in the thick of the playoff race near the end of the season and need an offensive boost, they could consider promoting Walcott, similarly to when they promoted outfielder Evan Carter for the final month of the 2023 season, which is a major reason why the Rangers won the World Series that year.
MLB Pipeline projects Walcott will make his MLB debut in 2027. That seems like the most likely scenario, as long as games actually are played next year.
