Texas Rangers utility man Ezequiel Duran's breakout season put him on a trajectory to do something special. No utility player had ever won both the Rawlings Gold Glove Award and the Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award in the same season. Duran took home the utility player Gold Glove when the winners were announced on November 1. He was the only one of the Rangers' four nominees to take home the honor. Now, he's taking another step closer to making history by officially being nominated for the Silver Slugger at the utility position.

The utility position was granted its own version of the Silver Slugger Award back in 2022 as an acknowledgement of the unique demands and challenges that playing multiple defensive positions while also excelling offensively presents.

To that end, there's no better selection than Duran, or as he's better known, "The Solution." The 27-year-old spent time at every position on the diamond, except pitcher and catcher, recording at least 14 appearances at shortstop, second base, third base, center field, right field, and left field.

Duran, as his Gold Glove win indicates, was an exceptional defender at many of those spots, including the toughest positions on the field like shortstop, center, second, and third. He also put together a .260/.320/.419 line that was good for a 109 wRC+, essentially nine percent better than the league-average hitter. That's a compelling case.

Rangers Ezequiel Duran was sensational in 2026, but faces an uphill battle for the Silver Slugger win

While Rangers fans have been in awe of Duran's transformation, going from an afterthought and potential non-tender candidate at this time last year to a legitimate All-Star snub, Gold Glove winner, and key contributor, his path to the Silver Slugger hardware is not an easy one.

There are two other nominees for the utility position: Sam Antonacci of the Chicago White Sox and Kevin McGonigle of the Detroit Tigers. Based solely on offense, both players have a better case than Duran to win the trophy.

  • Kevin McGonigle: .278/.376/.430 18 homers 129 wRC+
  • Sam Antonacci: .277/.370/.396 8 homers 122 wRC+
  • Ezequiel Duran: .260/.320/.419 17 homers 109 wRC+

These guys don't blow Duran out of the water, and in fact, the only area both are clearly better is in the on-base percentage department, but we'd be lying if we didn't acknowledge the difference.

However, there are a couple of things that could break in The Solution's favor. First, there's the fact that McGonigle is also a nominee for the shortstop award. His competition is fierce there, with Bobby Witt Jr. and Zach Neto also in the mix, but if he wins there, it will take him off the table for the utility version of the title.

The second point is a bit more meta. While this is an offensive award, one can look and say that, as a utility man, Duran is head and shoulders above the other two in what that word actually means. For example, Antonacci played three positions in the field; however, 121 of his games came in left field with another 32 at second base, plus he played a single inning at third. For McGonigle, the division of labor came between just two positions, with 96 games played at shortstop and 94 at the hot corner.

By that logic, they weren't really utility players in the truest sense. At least, not like Duran, who could start at a different position every day and sometimes move positions in-game. They qualify based on the rules, so they can't be dismissed. If the voters truly value versatility while providing offensive excellence, Duran is the clear choice.

Winners will be announced on November 17, so we'll have a couple of weeks to wait anxiously to see if a fan-favorite in Duran gets the well-deserved honor and makes history.
