Rangers' playoff path just got more difficult after Blue Jays Trey Yesavage update

The Texas Rangers' path to the postseason just got much tougher. According to MLB.com's Keegan Matheson, Blue Jays right-handed starting pitcher Trey Yesavage is set to make a rehab start with Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday. Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Yesavage could return to the big leagues on Sunday or Monday next week, according to Sportsnet's Hazel Mae.

After hosting the Boston Red Sox for three games from Tuesday to Thursday, the Rangers will begin a three-game series against the Blue Jays in Arlington on Friday, with the finale scheduled for Sunday. If the Blue Jays deploy Yesavage on Sunday, that won't be good news for the Rangers.

Mae did report that Schneider said Yesavage will most likely return to the rotation on Monday, meaning the Rangers could avoid facing the young star. Yesavage, 23, has been on the injured list since Aug. 5 with left knee inflammation. The right-hander is 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 91 strikeouts in 93 2/3 innings across 18 starts this season.

The Rangers-Blue Jays series will likely have major playoff implications, as the Blue Jays are one game out of the final Wild Card spot, and the Rangers are two games out. Texas is also just one game behind the Houston Astros for first place in the American League West.

Facing Blue Jays' Trey Yesavage would be tough task for Rangers

Some may see Yesavage's age and assume the lights could be too bright for the right-hander if he pitches against Texas on Sunday. However, Yesavage is no stranger to pitching in big moments. After making just three career regular-season starts in 2025, Yesavage posted a 3.58 ERA with a 1.05 WHIP and 39 strikeouts over 27 2/3 innings during the Blue Jays' World Series run last year. Hopefully, Yesavage pitches next Monday rather than Sunday against the Rangers.

Even if the Rangers don't face Yesavage, his return still hurts Texas given the Wild Card standings. Yesavage will likely make two more starts before the playoffs begin. If he is in peak form during those outings, it could be enough to force the Rangers out of the playoffs.

Let's just hope Texas takes care of business by winning the American League West. Funny enough, that may actually be an easier task than claiming the final Wild Card spot.
