Rangers Rumors: A pair of intriguing outfielders at varying price points are on Chris Young's radar

So far, the 2026 MLB trade deadline has been mostly smoke but not much fire, although the Texas Rangers are one of the few teams to bring forth any sort of action. Chris Young already began tackling the Rangers' needs with the deal for Chase Silseth and Logan O'Hoppe, but he could be on the prowl for more.

We've heard that Young could attack the deadline aggressively, and the latest rumors seem to indicate that will be the case. The rumor mill has now linked Texas to a pair of right-handed-hitting outfielders, which, while not a top need, would be a nice addition to the offensive arsenal.

As currently constructed, Wyatt Langford is the only full-time right-handed-hitting outfielder on the roster, with Evan Carter, Brandon Nimmo, and Alejandro Osuna all hitting from the left side. Cameron Cauley gives Skip Schumaker another right-handed presence, but he is at times required to fill in the infield.

Two different reports from The Athletic have the Rangers targeting different outfielders, with Kansas City Royals outfielder Lane Thomas and Baltimore Orioles slugger Taylor Ward both being connected to Texas.

Taylor Ward is the better player, but Lane Thomas is the better fit for the Rangers

We've heard about Ward as a potential fit for the Rangers before, and purely as a hitter, he makes some sense. The 32-year-old has had a bit of a weird season, watching his homer total dip from 36 a year ago to just seven this season. At the same time, his OBP has skyrocketed from .317 to .384. His true talent is likely somewhere in between, but he's shown that he can deliver in multiple ways.

The report from The Athletic indicates that he might be one of the top-of-the-market bats, and as such, a lot of the lower-tier options won't move until he does and sets the going rate for hitters.

That sounds enticing, but there are some limitations with Ward. For one, he can only play left field, and the Rangers already have a pretty good left fielder in Langford. For another, the defensive drop-off the club would face by acquiring Ward and moving Langford to center would be significant.

Beyond that, if Ward is truly one of the best bats on the market, and the Orioles are just 1.5 games out of the final wild card spot, he'll be prohibitively expensive. Trying to find the assets to acquire him would take Texas out of the running for other needs like another bullpen arm, perhaps another catcher, and help in the starting rotation.

So, while Thomas doesn't have quite the resume that Ward has, he's the better fit. He can play all three outfield positions reasonably well. That will give the Rangers a right-handed platoon option to pair with Evan Carter, who has been heating up recently.

Together, the pair could provide some real punch in center. Thomas is hitting .263/.370/.430 against southpaws. That's good for an .800 OPS. Carter is hitting .221/.341/.392 against righties, and again, he's been even better of late with an .807 OPS against right-handed pitching since June 6.

Getting a duo in center who could provide a roughly .800 OPS would be a game changer for the Rangers. Thomas would also allow the club to shore up the defense when other outfielders need a break by replacing Alejandro Osuna's porous glove.

So while Ward might be the bigger name, Thomas will cost a good deal less to acquire and fits the roster better, making him the obvious choice between these two rumored targets.
