Unsung heroes can become folk heroes rather quickly. One may not have been familiar with a player's past production or what their impact on a clubhouse could be. But, a midseason trade could allow a team to receive a new talent who reinvigorates an entire season.
Free agent outfielder Jesse Winker was a spark-plug player during the New York Mets' run to the NLCS. The Texas Rangers could benefit from his infectious swagger and ability to slug. Signing him this offseason could jumpstart the roster and ensure that 2025 offers real excitement.
Winker's 2024 numbers were solid. The Buffalo native hit .253 and cranked 14 home runs across 145 total contests. He ranked in the 96th percentile in BB%, the 78th percentile in Whiff%, and the 89th percentile in Batting Run Value.
Rangers should sign this spark-plug bat that helped Mets' NLCS run
He stepped up after being traded from the Washington Nationals, and was a key reason why the Mets came only two wins shy of a trip to the Fall Classic.
He provided one home run and four RBIs while hitting .318 across 10 Postseason games. His style of play was energetic and genuinely entertaining. Further, Winker fit into a Mets' clubhouse that thrived off of emotional momentum.
Texas' offense was rather uninspiring last season. Unlike the Mets, who consistently battled back, the Rangers never seemed to show real fight. Injuries were partially responsible for this trend, but a player like Winker could have ensured that the club maintained a sense of pride during rough stretches.
The Rangers have a number of holes to fill this winter. Their bullpen will need replacements, and it is not clear how they plan to construct their starting rotation. Even still, they may attempt to get another bat to help their lineup.
Since the team is reportedly attempting to stay under the luxury threshold, it is not likely they would go after a transformative piece . But, a former All-Star like Winker could be within their price range. He had a productive 2024, but is not considered an individual who will demand an outrageous payday.
The Rangers would benefit from adding someone like Winker. The 31-year-old has proven that he can be a positive influence in a Postseason clubhouse while also slugging the baseball somewhat consistently.
