Rangers trade deadline acquisition could solve offensive woes as Round Rock rampage continues

The Texas Rangers could use an offensive boost. Recalling recently acquired catcher Logan O'Hoppe could be just what the team needs. Texas acquired O'Hoppe and right-handed reliever Chase Silseth from the Los Angeles Angels for teenage infield prospect Angel Arrendondo on July 29. Texas optioned O'Hoppe to Triple-A Round Rock immediately after the deal.

O'Hoppe has been on an absolute tear with the Express, as the former Angels backstop has slashed .279/.380/.512 with one home run, seven doubles, and 10 RBI across 11 games since joining Round Rock.

Now is the time to recall O'Hoppe. With both Danny Jansen and Kyle Higashioka on the injured list, Elias Díaz is currently the Rangers' primary catcher. Díaz had a strong start to his Texas career, hitting .300/.315/.557 over his first 20 games with the Rangers after signing with them in early June, but his numbers have since dropped significantly.

Rangers should replace Elias Díaz with Logan O'Hoppe

Díaz has hit a poor .240/.262/.368 across 48 games with Texas this season. He has slashed .200/.250/.333 this month. O'Hoppe has also had a rough year, posting a .209/.271/.295 slash line in 75 games with the Angels. However, O'Hoppe is a 26-year-old with a much higher ceiling than Díaz, a 35-year-old journeyman. Calling up O'Hoppe while he's on a hot streak would be a smart move for Texas.

The Angels acquired O'Hoppe from the Philadelphia Phillies for outfielder Brandon Marsh back in 2022. The catcher posted a solid 112 OPS+ over 51 games in 2022 and was worth 2.7 bWAR in 2024. Unfortunately, he has since regressed drastically, posting 0.0 bWAR and a 75 OPS+ over 119 games in 2025 and -0.7 bWAR and a 62 OPS+ this year.

O'Hoppe is still relatively young, so hopefully we have yet to see the best version of the catcher. Meanwhile, Díaz can get hot in streaks, but he isn't good enough to carry an offense long-term. O'Hoppe may not be either, but the Rangers may as well find out by promoting him to the majors.

This month, the Rangers rank 26th in runs scored (42), 28th in wRC+ (72), and 28th in batting average (.207). Even though their offense has been one of the worst in the league, the Rangers are still in the postseason race, trailing the Detroit Tigers by half a game for the final American League Wild Card spot and the Houston Astros by three games for first place in the American League West with a 60-63 record. To remain in the postseason race, the Rangers must improve offensively, especially now that Jacob deGrom will likely join Nathan Eovaldi on the IL. Calling up O'Hoppe likely won't fix the Rangers' problems, but it could help.
