Rangers walk-off to open series eerily similar to this one from two years ago

The Rangers 8-5 win over the Yankees reminded us of a September 2023 walk-off victory.

The Texas Rangers pulled off perhaps their best win of the 2025 season when it was needed most and it strikes an odd similiarity to another legendary walk-off in franchise history.

After falling behind to the New York Yankees early on Monday, 3-0, the Rangers rallied for four runs in the second inning to take a one run lead. However, a Giancarlo Stanton line shot two innings later turned that lead into a deficit once again where it remained until the bottom of the ninth inning.

Down to their final two outs and trailing 5-4, Joc Pederson stepped to the plate. His struggles this season have been well documented to the point where anytime he hits, it feels like an automatic out. Which is exactly why a 2-1 changeup deposited into the right field stands to tie the game was extra shocking.

Thanks to Pederson, the Rangers survived to see extra innings and after holding the Yankees scoreless in the top of the tenth, Josh Jung drilled a walk-off three-run homer and send Rangers' fans home happy.

It was a huge win as the season is dwindling down and every win counts while Texas is on the hunt for a postseason spot, now 0.5 games back of the Wild Card and 4.5 back in the AL West division race.

Josh Jung's homer reminds us of Adolis Garcia's in Sept. 2023

On September 3, 2023, the Rangers entered a game against the Minnesota Twins on a massive skid losers of 12 of their last 15 games and fell from up 2.5 games in the division to down two games. They had lost the first two games of the series and were in desperate need of a victory.

Going into the bottom of the ninth tied 5-5, Adolis Garcia led off the inning and took a 2-2 pitch into the left field stands for a walk-off. Which is no known for one of Garcia's flashy celebrations where he untucked his shirt and was yelling running to first base.

Even though Texas would go on to lose their next four games, it turned the late-season funk around. On Sept. 9 they started a six game win streak and closed out the season winners of 14 of their last 22 games of the season.

Barely breaking into the playoffs on the second to last day they had to continue their road trip but turned it on in the playoffs winning their first 7 games and going 11-0 on the road to their first World Series. And it's hard to deny the impact that late-game win against Twins on the 3rd of September had on getting to the finish line.

Not saying the 2025 season will end exactly like that but after going 2-5 on the road, experiencing a struggling hitter finally break through in a clutch moment (Pederson) and then eventually finding a way to win the game is pure motivation to start a miracle win to the playoffs.
