For months, as the Rangers were starved for run production and playing uninspired offense, the idea that the Rangers would deal their veteran right-fielder Adolis Garcia for the right return tossed about like a cork in rough waters.
With his uneven play this year, combined with a trade-friendly contract situation and career trajectory headed in the wrong direction, Garcia was considered the most valuable bargaining chip on the roster, regardless of whether the Rangers were buyers or sellers.
Some wanted the rumors to be true so badly that social media accounts were hacked, spreading inaccurate information about Garcia's future with the team. At the end of the day, however, the power-hitting Cuban isn't going anywhere and there is one reason that stands out above the rest as to why.
Adolis Garcia is the emotional heartbeat of this team
First of all, it doesn't make sense to trade a starting outfielder who is leading the team in RBIs if there isn't a viable backup plan and are serious about trying to win this year.
But more than that, it is apparent that Chris Young, Bruce Bochy and the rest of the guys in the front office understand how valuable El Bombi is to emotional heartbeat of this team. They weren't about to rip the beating heart out of this team as they prepare for the final 50 games of the regualr season.
Corey Seager is your best player and perennial MVP candidate when healthy, but he is clearly not comfortable being an in-your-face, brash leader. He does it more by example while keeping his head down.
Every team needs a guy like Adolis Garcia
You'll hear former players in the broadcasting booth doing color talk about having "that guy" on the roster who is so important to setting an emotional tone for a team. A guy who isn't afraid to let his attitude and joy for the game be obvious.
Sure, it's good for his teammates to see Garcia's swag out there after a big home run, a cannon shot throw to nail a guy at home, or flashing the leather on defense but letting the guys in the other dugout know that the 6-foot-2, 230 pound Garcia has the back of each and every one of his teammates is irreplaceable.
While you appreciate the professionalism that even keel guys like Seager, Marcus Semien and Josh Smith bring to keep the clubhouse during a long 162-game season, the attitude and spark that Garcia delivers on an almost nightly basis is just as important.
So important, that while everything from his expiring contract to choppy efficiency at the plate so far this season screams for a trade, Garcia will have a chance to be part of what Rangers' fans hope is a second-half dash for the postseason.
