Where there is smoke, there is fire. This is true in the baseball world when a team so openly is fielding trade offers like the Boston Red Sox are regarding Jarren Duran, especially when it makes way to much sense to not happen.
There is a lot of chatter about the Texas Rangers cutting payroll and getting younger. The older the roster got after 2023, the less competent they looked and this feels like a natural step to getting back in the right direction.
Being obsessed with prospects is not a bad thing but needs perspective. The Rangers are in a place to take risks while they still have franchise cornerstones and snagging Duran in a trade can change the outlook for the future.
Here's why the Texas Rangers should trade for Jarren Duran
The Rangers have outfield talent. Wyatt Langford, Evan Carter, Alejandro Osuna and the ghost of Adolis Garcia remain on the roster currently. It is the youngest unit on the team while also being the most volatile and injury prone.
Adolis Garcia is at a major point in his career where he can be out of baseball in a year or signing a hefty free agent contract following a successful 2026 season. He is on the last year of club control and is more of a problem than an answer. It is almost a certainty he will not be returning to Texas for 2026.
Duran is currently under an $8 million option for 2026 that can escalate to $12 million depending on All-MLB and MVP placements. This would save the Rangers about $3 million initially in their journey to get cheaper while bringing in a talented outfielder and ditching Garcia.
The 29-year-old is coming off a down year after an incredibly impressive 2024 campaign. He is not a guarantee to rebound but an almost guaranteed everyday starting spot with little background noise/competition could bring out the best of Duran.
He has a bit of a strikeout problem with 160 and 169 in the last 2 seasons while still carrying a career .328 OBP. His slash line of .256/.442/.774 shows more cause for concern for his power. His consistency also faltered but that slash line would drastically improve the Rangers outfield slash line.
The Rangers outfield was incredibly unproductive outside of Wyatt Langford who still also underperformed expectations. Boston is in a polar opposite problem and Duran seems to be on the way out.
Between Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela, Masataka Yoshida, Jhostynxon Garcia, Roman Anthony and Rob Refnsyder, there is a clear need to get rid of somebody or multiple. This outfield is crowded and there will be suitors.
Who should Rangers consider trading for Duran?
The Rangers even may look into multiple of these outfielders with the Red Sox having a loaded farm system. Following the trade deadline dump of pitchers, it doesn't seem the Rangers are dedicated to any prospect besides Sebastian Walcott who might be a future outfielder himself.
Sacrificing prospects to improve the MLB team is necessary right now. Duran would drastically raise the floor of outfield while having the chance to drastically raise the ceiling of the entire team. The Rangers are in no place to sit complacent or just sign an average outfielder praying for the best.
The price for Duran might not be too steep. Trading potential impact arms in Corniell, Santos or Rosario are absolutely in play while pairing them with Cam Cauley or Yeremy Cabrera could get it done. There are pieces there to get it done and the Rangers need to be the top bidder.
This is the right time to make a risk for now and the future. If the goal is to capitalize on the pitching they currently have, then grabbing bats has to be the main priority. There are plenty to pick from but why not go after the one the Red Sox are essentially begging to get rid of.
