While Texas Rangers fans continue to wonder just what POBO Chris Young will do to make the team better at the deadline, the Los Angeles Angels surprisingly jumped into the buyers' market with a trade that saw them acquire not one, but two new relief pitchers.
The move to get both Andrew Chafin and Luis Garcia might be the most surprising deadline deal swung so far, considering no one really expected the Angels to make a playoff push. However, much like the Rangers, LA is still at least within shouting distance of the AL Wild Card. After winning the first two games of a head-to-head series with Texas, they're only 3 games behind the Rangers in the standings.
What the Angels’ Andrew Chafin–Luis García deal means for the Rangers’ deadline plans
If there is some solace for Texas Rangers fans, it doesn't appear as though the Angels got anywhere near the best relievers on the market.
García, 0.90 ERA in 10 innings with the Nationals after he had a 5.27 ERA in 27 1/3 innings earlier this season with the Dodgers, who designated him for assignment on June 29. He has a combined 4.10 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings this year.
Chafin, has posted a 2.70 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 20 innings this season. The Nationals had been very careful on when they used him and where as he's also missed time at the beginning of the year with injury.
As we're now officially inside 24 hours until the MLB Trade Deadline passes, the Texas Rangers have still been very quiet. However, every MLB insider around believes Chris Young plans to be aggressive. Whatever move he makes will likely come on Thursday.
